As predicted in our preview report, South Africa had a tough time competing against India. And even though India took nearly 50 overs to chase a moderate target, their batting line up got good practice and they were the favorites from the first few overs of the match. In 4th over of SA innings, India claimed the first wicket and then never looked back. They kept SA restricted to an underwhelming score of 227 for 9 in 50 overs. India chased the target down in 47.3 overs with loss of 4 wickets.
South Africa decided to bat first after winning the toss but they never managed to get their innings going. Bumrah started brilliantly by claiming both SA openers whereas Chahal broke SA middle order with his accurate spinning deliveries to claim 4 for 51 in his 10 overs. For South Africa, score could have been much more lower if not for good contributions by their lower order with Phelukwayo, Morris & Rabada all scoring over 30 runs.
India started cautiously but even then lost 2 wickets rather quickly at 54 runs with some accurate and threatening fast bowling by SA pace bowlers. However KL Rahul along with Rohit Sharma played slowly but confidently and took game away from SA. After Rahul, Dhoni joined Sharma in taking the chase closer and even though he could not finish the match, Rohit did and India won by 6 wickets. Rohit Sharma even though looked out of form in initial overs but had the courage to grind it out and eventually finish not out on 122 runs making him man of the match.
South Africa now has the tough task to win the last 6 matches of their World Cup 2019 campaigns to have a chance for a spot in semi finals. Whereas India would be happy to start their world cup campaign with a win.
