Sri Lanka bowlers especially Malinga managed to hold their nerves in their world cup match against Afghanistan to win their first world cup match in 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup.
As pointed in our preview and as it turned out, batting was the issue for both the teams. Sri Lanka started well but could not complete their batting innings getting bowled out for just 201 in less than 37 overs. Kusal Perera top scored opening the batting for Sri Lanka with 78 not out in 81 balls.
Afghanistan, due to persistent rains for close to two hours, got target of 187 in 41 overs with D/L calculations. They would have hoped to chase this out however their batting faltered against an experienced pace duo of Malinga and Pradeep to get bowled out for 152 runs in 32.4 overs. Nazibullah Zadran tried to pull of a win with the help of lower order but his 43 of 56 bowls proved a little less for getting a win.
Sri Lanka has now a win in 2 matches and will hope their world cup campaign can get some steam ahead in big matches. Afghanistan on the other hand should look to get out of a shell they seem to have gone into and try to play pressure free cricket to at least take games close.
